Planning ahead financially is key for a retirement that meets our needs and wants. Being active in our 60s & 70s can be fun if our health & attitude are good and money is available. Things can change quickly in the 80s.
From my recent experience with my mom, I realize that a key part of planning for retirement resides in accepting that our retirement at the latter part of our life may be very different than we believe. And we need to prepare for it!
My mom could not envision a change at this stage of her life, but 30 days after moving to Independent Living at Atria, all is well! Repeatedly, she told us she was “fine” and was not moving, but at the same time was spending a lot of time alone and making her kids crazy with worry. Long story short — we reserved an apartment at Atria in Willow Glen and begged her to stay for 30 days.
We moved her favorite furniture and clothes — and now her place looks and feels like home and she is so much more active and happy!
